Seeing your name on newspapers or televisions because of your innovations and achievements which you never thought would become a trend and would inspire other people of how far you’ve gone. It is deeply self-satisfaction when you can admit to other people that you build something that really comes from your own and that virtual images in your head of becoming like other successful engineers will turn into reality if you have the courage to become one. Who wouldn’t want to be successful?
According to Matthew Sutton(2013), to be a successful engineer, a person should have a good mind to be able to solve different mathematical problems. An engineer, who strives to be successful should have good critical thinking skills and a brilliant mind. He/She should also be good at communicating with other people so that he/she can easily interact with the clients and convert scientific terms into simple words that even civilian people can understand it easily. Aside from a good mind, an engineer should also have a good heart for him to become a good follower. An old saying states that “A good follower is a good leader”. Everyone starts from following other people and from that, a person can become a good leader. Being a good leader is essential, especially in making a large-scale project because these moments is where the leadership skills will be tested. An engineer should have these kinds of qualities for him to become successful.
But how can we say that an engineer is successful? Is it about the awards? Achievements? Or is about the personality? According to Arushi Misra(2014), when you, as a human being, achieve your long- desired goal, and when you have achieved fame, wealth, and social status, after a long period of hardships and trials, you are now successful. An example engineer who has achieved all of those, fame wealth, power, and knowledge, is named Engr. Doroteo M. Salazar. As stated by the Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology, because of his significant contributions to the field of Civil Engineering and for his excellent achievements made in the last 10 years, he was awarded one of the 75 Filipino Outstanding Civil Engineers by the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers.
“As a working student during my college days, I took pride in receiving the award for it symbolizes hope for all poor, but hardworking and deserving students. This award is for every poor student who, like me, worked hard to clain his share in this competitive world”, Dr. Salazar stated.
Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. once said in the 39th National Convention of the Philippines Institute of Civil Engineers at the SMX Convention Davao City that was posted in the website of Bong Bong Marcos, “The role and function of civil engineering in society pervade virtually all aspects of our daily lives. From the hospitals where we are born, to the homes where we are raised and where we reside, to the buildings where we work and where we unwind, to the roads, bridges, railways and waterways we traverse and utilize, and up to our very graves, we can see the intellectual imprint and the indelible imprimatur of the civil engineer.” We cannot deny the fact that civil enginees were versatile when it comes to the society. We can reflect during the time when thyphoon Yolanda hit the Philippines and when the earthquake happened in cebu, engineers where enable to restore and reconstruct the infrastructure and the houses that were wrecked by the calamities. They are also essential for improving the society and the industrialization of community. Improving the society by making a study for the betterment of our living. Example of this are the journals in the internetand university libraries. Improvingof society leads to industrialization., there would be more buildings to build, more malls to shop at and importantly there would be more employers, more job vacancies and when it occur there would be increased of employment rate.
Civil engineers signifies the start of our country’s ability to compete globally. They are necessary for fulfilling the needs of the people in our society. Without them, our country will not be able to attain our current status in the different industries. Civil engineers reflect the ability of our country to produce world-class Filipinos.
