The necessity of more structures warrants the demand of civil engineers who can guarantee standard services. Filipino civil engineers are known to be globally competitive. They exert full effort when doing projects to ensure their client’s contentment upon their performances. With this, vast number of Filipino civil engineers has achieved excellence advancing their trademark of their field of work nationwide and worldwide.
The success of engineers start at their training grounds. Civil engineers must practice their profession through quality education that they can get from universities that render the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Program. A lot of standard universities are available here in the Philippines such as the University of the Philippines (UP), De Las Salle University Manila (DLSU), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), University of Sto. Tomas (UST), and the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP). These universities are certified by reliable accrediting associations such as the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU). Also, they produce excellent graduates that are among the CE Licensure Exam passers with high-passing rate.

Structural Engineering: The Difficulties in Rendering Services in Mindanao

Structural engineers‘ research structural components and structural systems to achieve design goals and ensure the safety of the users. Some of their works include the designs and structures of bridges and roads. In Mindanao there is a great number of civil engineers.  If so, then they must have the capacity of building grand bridges and fully paved roads. Mindanao should have been prospering centuries ago but as we can see we are still in the process of upgrading the roads. It may be confusing what the real cause behind this for people have many opinions as to what really is the reason for this dilemma. Why had it been difficult in rendering Mindanao? What are the factors that hinder the engineers with their services? We believe it is the disasters that better Mindanao.
Every project structural engineers have cost money. They would need funds of course in making their plans come true. But they are not the one funding their projects much less controlling the budget. In places it is up to the government if they want something built in their place of responsibility. The local government control the financing which left the engineers to adjust themselves. Just like the unfinished bridge in Zamboanga City that had been subjected to the pork barrel of its mayor. The budget given to it was 10 million pesos and yet it was still unfinished. They’ve also seen that the unfinished bridge has led to unfinished roads. This is the evidence that guides us to corruption which also is evident in all places.

In our country we experience a lot of calamities such as hurricanes and flash floods. Due to these calamities there are more possibilities that make our development slow. Our government tend to pay more attention in fixing the infrastructures that were destroyed by these calamities.  Since the government aim to fix and not build, some of the infrastructure plans in Mindanao are being postponed. Some cases involve the fact that some places in Mindanao have a very harsh environment that may cause the building of the infrastructure harder.

We all know that in Mindanao, there still an all-out war going on. These wars between the army and the rebels make it harder to build infrastructures. No one would like to improve the infrastructures if it’s expected to be destroyed soon because of the war.  The fact that there’s hazardous presence of war in some places in Mindanao hinders the possibility of the development of the infrastructures. These continuing wars is the reason why Mindanao has a low human development index that results to difficulties of producing future workers that builds the economy of Mindanao.

Since we believe that the factors that hinder the engineers with their services are disasters that batters Mindanao, we also think that engineers should build strong and efficient foundations to the infrastructures to be build. These foundations / infrastructures shall withstand the said major and minor calamities and disasters.
