The necessity of more structures warrants the demand of civil engineers who can guarantee standard services. Filipino civil engineers are known to be globally competitive. They exert full effort when doing projects to ensure their client’s contentment upon their performances. With this, vast number of Filipino civil engineers has achieved excellence advancing their trademark of their field of work nationwide and worldwide.
The success of engineers start at their training grounds. Civil engineers must practice their profession through quality education that they can get from universities that render the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Program. A lot of standard universities are available here in the Philippines such as the University of the Philippines (UP), De Las Salle University Manila (DLSU), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), University of Sto. Tomas (UST), and the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP). These universities are certified by reliable accrediting associations such as the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU). Also, they produce excellent graduates that are among the CE Licensure Exam passers with high-passing rate.

Samal-Davao Bridge : Its Pros and Cons

“Great work comes from a great mind”. It is essential that prior to making a decision, engineers have to know first the benefits and the dis-advantages of constructing the Samal-Davao Bridge. They should think wisely if it is for better or for worst. Guiding the Pros and Cons of building a bridge has a major impact of what would be the outcome of the bridge. The purpose of this is to make sure that the bridge is beneficiary or not. Bridges carry road or railway across a natural or artificial obstacle (rivers, canals, etc.).           Bridges are needed for variety of reasons. This includes ‘bridging’ a gap between one city to another. Pros and Cons that should be considered in building include the location of the bridge, the environmental and economic impact.

One of the problems in constructing the bridge is its location. The Business World sites that the Governor of Davao Del Norte, Rodolfo del Rosario said that, considering the congestion in the Sasa area, long-dreamed of Samal bridge is better off to span from Barangay JP Laurel, the first barangay in Panabo City because Samal Island is a part of Davao Del Norte. He also added that the area is open space than Sasa. But the problem is, Babak-Panabo City is about 3km which is more risk in travelling, while Babak-Sasa seaport is only about 1km.

Building the bridge will also have an effect on the environment. This includes the effect on Samal’s drainage plans, eradication of marine wildlife and destruction of their habitats, and the effect of the influx of tourists in Samal’s local culture. Another effect is the increase in the number of garbages in both cities, pollution in water and an environmental degradation in the island. On the other hand, Wit Holganza stated that the bridge will lessen the destruction of marine habitat due to “roro” traffic in the channel.  Government should consider this environmental impact in order to preserve the beauty and culture of Samal as a tourist destination.

Building the bridge may also affect the livelihood of the crew member. Mindanao Times have interviewed one of the crew members of a passenger boat on what would be the possible effect to them if the project is done. The crew said “Maapektuhan gyud. Mamingaw na kay sa tulay naman muagi.”, when he was asked about his thoughts on the possible effect.

On the other side, building the bridge has also advantages. Governor Rodolfo del Rosario said that building the bridge can help boost the tourism of Samal Island. Tourists could easily travel. It will produce more job opportunities for the tourist guides.  It lowers the cost of the transportation of people, goods and materials for business like construction materials. It increases the accessibility of the resorts that are rising in IGaCoS. It improves mobility of the people in the island.

When building a bridge, there are many options that should be considered. Through listing the pros and cons of a bridge, they can truly find out the benefits and its dis-advantages. They can find out if it is best to start building the bridge or if it is too early to start it. This way, they can truly find out if the bridge is really beneficial or will be just a waste of time and money.
